Republican says it was one of the finest games ever witnessed in this city." (implying there were games prior to this). The Black Crooks are probably a team composed of the cast of "Black Crook," a play/tableau that was touring Illinois at the time. The play/tableau featured scantily clad women, a fact many newspapers disapproved of!
