Description

The Chicago Tribune, July 27, 1867, has an extensive article on the State base ball convention. Among the clubs sending delegates were the O.K. and Shabbona of Ottawa.

The Ottawa Free Trader has many articles on the local games. The OFT of July 9, 1870, has a long article on the game in Ottawa between the Shabbonas and the visiting Eckfords of Chicago, which Ottawa won. The articles gives the names of the players, including Al. Sapp at 1st base. This "Al. Sapp" is Alvin Jennings Sapp (3-20-1850 1-20-1919), a printer, whose brother Francis Marion Sapp (born 5-30-1838) edited the Ottawa Republican. They were sons of Noah Sapp (1809-70), publisher of the Peru Herald.

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
