Description

"The first newspaper mention of organized baseball in New Orleans is of a game played July 29, 1859, between two nines (teams) of the Louisiana Base Ball Club. The sides started at 4 o’clock, and the nines could only complete four innings before darkness postponed the play, which was completed a few days later." New Orleans Times-Picayune, July 29, Aug. 3, 1859.  Bruce Allardice, "The Inauguration of this Noble and Manly Game Among us. The Spread of Baseball in the South Prior to 1870," Base Ball, Fall 2012.

The 1859 Louisiana BBC had as its captains Florida-born Charles W. Pescay (1828-87), a grocer, sailor and salesman who moved to Houston after the Civil War and died there, and J. H. Jones. Pescay, a Confederate army veteran, is buried in Lafayette Cemetery, New Orleans. "Jones" is probably NY-born John Huntington Jones (1827-98), who owned the "Iron House" Restaurant in New Orleans. He returned to the North at the start of the Civil War and later catered the Manhattan Club in NYC. He died in Providence, RI.

1860 club officers were: H. P. Jones, President; R.M. Verlander, Secy; J. N. Howard, VP; T. A. Johnson, Treasurer; J. H. Jones, Steward, and C. W. Pescay.

A Samuel H. M. Verlander (1836-1909) was a NO clerk in 1860. A Harry Jones (b. 1820 Philadelphia) was a bookkeeeper in 1860 NO. A T. A. Johnson was a 45 year old butcher, born MA, in 1860 NO.

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
