Description

The first newspaper mention of organized baseball in New Orleans is of a game played July 29, 1859, between two nines (teams) of the Louisiana Base Ball Club, Pescay's nine vs. Jones' nine. The sides started at 4 o’clock, and the nines could only complete four innings before darkness postponed the play, which was completed a few days later. See the New Orleans Times-Picayune, July 29, Aug. 3, 1859. See also the New York Clipper, Aug. 20, 1859. Both give a box score.

The article from July 29 calls the game tp be "the good old fashioned game of base" which evokes memories of "many a well contest game" in the past. The club had played "last week," according to the reporter.

(Louisiana Base Ball Club intra-club game)

Game completed Aug.; 12. See NOTP 8-13-59.

(The Daily Picayune (New Orleans): “There was a large and interesting gathering … nine were chosen on each side. / The rules require that a match shall consist of nine innings on each side. …  [Pascay’s side led 55-14 at end of fourth inning.] The match is to be concluded on Tuesday afternoon.”)

Final score--Pescay's side 82, Jones' 24.
