Description

"Giddings at Bat and Ball--In Jefferson, Ohio, the residence of Hon. J. R. Giddings, the villagers amuse themselves every evening playing ball..."

The article notes the game was 14 a side, and Congressman Giddings, who was 64, wielded a mighty bat.

Note:  A 2015 find by Sean Lahman describes 1959 play in Jefferson that uses teams of 14, with games decided at 100 runs, noting that base-ball had been played by "early settlers" in the area.  See Chronology entry 1830c.30.  It appears that this game followed a one-out-side-out format, as did the MA game at that time.
