Description | "the Hill" appears to refer to College Hill in Lewisburg, where Bucknell University (then Lewisburg University) sits. The "Olympian" club of the university is mentioned in other accounts. Cf. Lewisburg Chronicle, Oct. 14, 1870. Baseball is said to have reached Bucknell in the early 1860s. See https://www.departments.bucknell.edu/edu/bu_history_old/photo_history/1865/1865_UnivBuilding.html Games among the college nines (e.e., class of 71 vs. class of 73) are also mentioned. |

Comment | See also The Bucknellian, Nov. 3, 1938 has an article on early sports at Bucknell. The writer says the earliest mention of baseball at Bucknell is in the diary of J. Sexton James, class of 1868, on Sept. 28, 1867 where the freshman team beat the rest of the college team 47-19. From this the Olympian Club sprang. Edit with form to add a comment |
