Description | Wright's Grove was on North Clark Street, between North Broadway and Diversey. It was the site of the Civil War Camp Fry, a training camp for Union soldiers. The location was then in Lake View, which was annexed by Chicago in 1889. A reminisce in the Chicago Tribune, Dec. 19, 1915 says the Aetna Club practiced at Wright's Grove, "at the terminus of the Clark Street car line, between Fullerton and Diversey Avenues, west of Clark Street, where rough 'diamonds" were laid out on the unbroken, grass-grown prairie." It was a popular spot to play in 1867. On Aug. 21, 1867, the Chicago 2nd nine defeated the Alpha Club 41-21 there. |

Comment | An 1868 image from the CHS is in protopix. It was called Timothy Wright's Grove in the 1850s, after the co-owner of the Chicago Tribune. Edit with form to add a comment |
