Description | "Women played only in unofficial mixed-gender 'ladies' games at the big hotels. In these games, men had to wear skirts as a handicap. As the skirts on bathing suits became shorter, women started to wear shorter skirts with stockings or leggings in sports, and 'ladies' baseball in Beach Haven ended by World War I." |

Comment | This article reports on a game held in conjunction with Beach Haven's 125th anniversary in May 2015. The article touches on local ballplaying through the years including the mixed-gender, skirts-only version of baseball played prior to World War I. While this account was proffered to Protoball as the game of Skirt Ball, the account does not actually use that term. Thanks to Heidi Cassells and Paul B. Hammond for finding this unusual game. Beach Haven NJ is on the Atlantic coast and about 20 miles NE of Atlantic City. It had a population of 272 in 1910.
