The match game of base-ball played yesterday evening between the Pastimes of Richmond and the Old Dominions of this city resulted in a victory for the former by a score of seventy-three to forty-three. At nigh the Pastimes, with numerous invited guests, among the elder portion of whom were noticed General M. D. Corse, Mayor Ludlow of Norfolk, H. W. Vandegrift, Esq., J. B. Dangerfield, Esq., and Captain W. H. Dulaney, were handsomely entertained by the Old Dominions at the Mansion House, where two or three hours were most agreeably spent around the sumptuously prepared tables in the interchange of sentiment and wit, interspersed with occasional songs.

Richmond Daily Dispatch, 23 September 1867, reprinted from the Alexandria Gazette

It seems that in the South much of the social-club nature that characterized pre-war baseball in New York persisted into the late 1860s, while NY ball was becoming grimly competitive and effectively professional.
