Description | The Dubuque Daily Herald, July 4, 1867: "Match game of ball--The match game of ball between the Clippers of Dubuque and the Lead Mine Club, of Galena, takes place in the latter city to-day..." Don Korte's "Galena's Baseball Legacy" says the Leadmine Club (Galena is noted for the lead mines in the area) was formed in 1867 and had a younger membership than the Galena/Jo Daviess Club. The Leadmines lost to the Clippers (see above) 85-39, the Leadminers weakness being that "they throw wild and are not well up to the flies in the field." Galena appears to have had a base ball club in 1866. The Springfield Illinois State Register, Sept. 1, 1866, in an article on the baseball tournament to be held in Bloomington, IL on the 11th, mentions that "clubs from Chicago, Dubuque, Galena... and various other cities, have already announced themselves ready to put in an appearance..." |
