Description | The Fayetteville Eagle, May 28, 1867, says that on May 16th the Lafayette Base Ball Club was organized, with Colonel John W. Hinsdale as president,. The club "plays on a field north of Rowan St." and has 36 members. Same, Sept. 17, 1868 has the LaFayette playing the Harnett of Wilmington, losing 39-5 in 4 innings (game called due to darkness). The Fayetteville News, July 9, 1867, reporting on the recent state baseball convention in Raleigh, says the following clubs attended: Elm City of New Bern, University of Chapel Hill, Rip Van Winkle of Concord, Star & Crescent of Raleigh, Fisher of Company Shops, Chockayette of Weldon, and LaFayette of Fayetteville. Basic C. Manly of the Crescent was chosen president of the new state association. |
