Description | The Savannah [GA] Daily Advertiser, June 29, 1871: "The De Soto Base Ball Club of Lake City terrified the Jeffersons of Monticello by a score of 63 to 11." The Savannah Morning News, Aug. 11, 1874, notes that the Garden City Club is to play in Savannah against the local "Juniors" for the GA-FL championship. Prints a letter by "D. Wilson, secretary, Base Ball Association of Florida" saying Garden City is the champion club of Florida, having beaten the Jefferson of Monticello and the DeSoto of Lake City. This man is David C. Wilson(1843-1906), a local merchant and Confederate army veteran. Wilson's claim to the state championship was disputed in the SMN 8-15-74 issued by "Charles T. Carroll, Secretary Jefferson Base Ball Club" of Monticello. Same 8-20-74 says the Jefferson are coming to Savannah to play the Savannah Juniors for the Ga-FL championship. Mentions ss Caraway Smith, C. T. Carroll, William Carroll and Jeff. Lamar on the team. Caraway Paul Smith (b. 1853) was son of Colonel J. Caraway Smith a leading local planter and Confederate colonel. Jefferson Lamar (1856-1939) was the son of Major Thompson B. Lamar. Charles Thomas Carroll (1838-1903) was Sgt. 3rd Florida Infantry in the Civil War. As can be seen, these players are sons of the town's leading citizens. Same July 26, 1875 notes that the Dixie's of Savannah beat the Garden City of Tallahassee at Tallahassee on the 23rd and the Jefferson of Monticello on the 24th. |
