Description | Michael Johnson, “Beyond the Baselines: Baseball in the Hawaiian Islands as a Transnational Sport, 1840-1945” (UH Manoa, PHD dissertation, 2014) cites the journal of J. L. Fox of the Wilkes expedition, exploring the Oregon Territory (which included what is now the state of Washington), that at Nisqually (modern DuPont, WA) in 1841 the sailors of the USS Vincennes played a game with bats and balls. The exact game is unclear. |
