Description | "Saturday March the 6th. We drilled as before and through the day we play ball and amuse ourselves the best way we can. It is very cool weather and clothing scarce." Smith, Azariah, The Gold Discovery Journal of Azariah Smith [Utah State University, Logan UT, 1996], page 78. Submitted by John Thorn, 10/12/2004. Smith was a veteran of the Mormon Battalion, which served in the Mexican War. The diary makes clear he was at or near Coloma, CA in March 1848, mining for gold. It is unclear what type of predecessor ball game was being played. |
