[A] The first organized baseball game played in Atlanta took place May 12, 1866, in a field on Hunter Street west of Oakland Cemetery. The Atlanta Base Ball Club lost to a newly formed challenger, the Gate City Base Ball Club, 127 to 29.

[B and C] Alan Morris, on 9/10/13, adds that this game lasted four and one-half hours.

Atlanta GA (1860 population 9500, 1870 population about 23,000) is about 230 miles NW of Savannah.

[B] Further details of this game are given in Tim Darnell, The Crackers -- Early Days of Atlanta Baseball (2012).

[C] The Atlanta Constitution Oct. 21, 1906 carried a 40th anniversary account of this game and the Gate City team, including a photo of the team members. See also Atlanta Journal, May 5, 1971; Atlanta History Bulletin, Dec. 1947, where it's claimed that the Gate City won 36 games in 1866.

In 1867 the Gate City BBC claimed the championship of the state and issued a challenge to other state BBCs. See Savannah Daily News and Herald, May 29, 1867. They lost to the Dixies of Athens in 1868, and lost to the Savannahs 27-23 at the state fair in Macon in 1869. See Atlanta New Era, Nov. 21, 1869.

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
