Description | Match Game of Base Ball. (only part of article copied.....only differences from the St. Paul Press article of the game date noted) The Club have erected a stand or awning overlooking the field, capable of accommodating from fifty to seventy-five persons, and we were gratified at seeing it nearly filled with ladies yesterday to witness the amusement. It is due to the Excelsior Club to state that in the game played the members that took part in it, had practiced together but once before and were therefore almost entirely lacking in that concert of action so necessary, and which in no small degree contributed to the success of the North Star Club in the contest yesterday. The interest in the game however did not flag until its close, and the crowd of spectators present remained until the final inning was scored. The following is the cast of players and the score of the game: Umpire: Capt. Telford Scorer for the North Star: Dr. Potts Scorer for the Excelsior: F.S. McDonald Lineups (same as listed in St. Paul Press) Note: The Pioneer listed score as 38 to 11 and Press as 38 to 14 (I take the 38 to 14 score as accurate since they list runs scored by each player and it adds to 14) North Star 4 6 3 1 10 6 2 6 0 = 38 Excelsior 1 2 2 1 0 1 1 0 3 = 11 The game throughout was played with the utmost good humor on both sides, and at its conclusion the members of the Excelsior Club expressed themselves highly gratified with the afternoon's amusement, and thus ended the first match game of base ball in St. Paul. Fort Snelling is about 8 miles SE of Minneapolis and about 7 miles SW of St. Paul. |

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know
Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
