| Description | (Chicago Daily Press and Tribune (2): “This is the first match of the season, and deserves encouragement. The Nines comprise the flower of each Club, and have been in rigorous training for some time past preparatory to this match. The Committee have made arrangements for the accommodation of a large concourse of spectators, and numerous tents have been erected for the benefit of the ladies. The Madison street omnibus runs to and from the ground every half hour.”) CDJ Aug. 31, 1858: "Base Ball--It is gratifying to see this manly, healthful game, coming again into general fashion.... If they cannot strike out at once into the ground old game of base, let them begin with one old cat--not the old cat--or even with barn ball, if not ambitious. What a rush there would be to catch the rascal out, if not direct from heaven, at least on the first bound., for the first bound is out, you know. Yesterday, a base ball match was played between the Union and Excelsior clubs, resulting thus: Union 11, Excelsior 17." |
