Description

This game appears in the Protoball Games Tabulation (Detroit table) compiled by Craig Waff. It was reported on August 13, 1859 by Porter's Spirit, the correspondent calling it the "first match of Base Ball in this city."

(Porter’s Spirit of the Times (2): “… the game being the first match of Base Ball in this city.  The grounds were filled at an early hour … the ‘Early Risers’ playing to disadvantage being on the grounds of the ‘Detroit Club,’ which is very uneven and not adapted to playing on.  They intend to have a new ground next season.”)

Detroit's population in 1860 was about 45,500, and it was the 19th largest city in the US.
