Description | The Wilmington Journal, May 24, 1867, reports that the Crescent Club of Raleigh invites other ball clubs in NC to meet in Raleigh to form a state association. This club was sometimes called the "Star & Crescent". The Fayetteville News, July 9, 1867, reporting on the recent state baseball convention in Raleigh, says the following clubs attended: Elm City of New Bern, University of Chapel Hill, Rip Van Winkle of Concord, Star & Crescent of Raleigh, Fisher of Company Shops, Chockayette of Weldon, and LaFayette of Fayetteville. Major Basic C. Manly (1839-82) of the Crescent, a Confederate army veteran, was chosen president of the new state association. |
