Description | "The championship match played on Johnson's Island, August 1, 1864 is the earliest match game, yet discovered, of baseball played in Ohio. This is not to say that baseball had not been previously played in the state or that there were not baseball clubs in Ohio, There were, in fact, clubs, but their activity was limited to intra-club play or play within a club. There was a club in Sandusky and another nearby in Toledo in 1860." This presumably is the same club mentioned in the Cleveland Daily Leader, Aug. 10, 1866 as the Toledo Base Ball Club, which successfully sued a resident who refused to return base balls hit into his yard! The Toledo City Directory for 1868 says the Toledo BBC was organized June 1866, and as of Nov. 1867 had 90 members. The Toledo Blade, Aug. 30, 1860 announced the formation of this club, with Orson Kingsbury as president. It is unclear where this and other early clubs played, but the Lucas County Fairgrounds were (in 1870) on Dorr St. and are a likely candidate. In 1860, Toledo's population was about 13,800, ranking 68th in the US. It grew to 31,000 residents in 1870, making it the 40th largest city. |
