Description

The Cass County Republican, May 26, 1859: "Match Game of Ball--A game of Base Ball was played on Saturday last in this village, for a supper, between the Dowagiac Base Ball Club and the Pokagon club. The Pokagaon boys came off victorious.... We understand that a return game will take place in Pokagon, in about two weeks." Same, June 9, 1859, reports that Dowagiac won the return game. "The game was 31 points, best two in three. There were eight on a side."

The latter article suggests that the latest NY rules were, at a minimum, not strictly followed.

A club of Pokagaon existed in 1867. See Kalamazoo Telegraph, July 10, 1867

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
