Description | The Joliet News Oct. 26, 1894 mentions the Manteno BBC. The Chicago Inter Ocean, Aug. 25, Sept. 3 and Oct. 3 1895 report on Chicago teams traveling to play a "crack" Manteno club. Manteno manager William C. Mellanson (1862-1942) offered to pay the expenses of Chicago clubs coming down to play Manteno. Baseball was probably played earlier in Manteno--though a search of of the Kankakee Gazette through 1876 yields no mention of such game. There's a hint from an "old timer" in 1887 that Manteno had baseball in 1870. See Kankakee, Grove City club entry. Manteno had 632 residents in 1880. |
