Description | The Wheaton Illinoian, July 31, 1885 reports that the Elmhurst BBC recently lost to Bensenville at Bensenville. The Oak Park Vindicator, June 2, 1899: "The Harlem Maroons and the Elmhurst Club played a game of ball at the Lathrop Grounds on Tuesday afternoon." Harlem won 9-8, with a clutch double in the last inning driving in the winning runs. Same July 21, 1899 has Elmhurst beating the Harlem Giants 9-1. Elmhurst was founded in 1869, and incorporated in 1882. Original name: Cottage Hill. It had 1728 residents in 1900, 723 in 1880 and 329 in 1870. A heavily German community, it seems to have adopted baseball relatively late. This is the first instance I've found of an organized team, though undoubtedly baseball was played informally prior to 1885. |
