Description | Des Moines "Daily Iowa State Register," May 15, 1866: "The young men of [DeWitt] have organized a base ball club." Their first games (with box scores) (with Tipton) are reported in the DeWitt Observer, July 18, 1866 The Muscatine Evening Journal, July 10, 1867 mentions the Hawkeye Club of De Witt. Waukegan Weekly Gazette, Sept. 14, 1867 mentions the Hawkeye and Pacific club of Dewitt. Clinton Herald, Aug. 25, 1866 mentions the Hawkeye of DeWitt. DeWitt IA (1870 pop. about 1750) is about 20 mile N of Davenport IA.
