"Base Ball at Cairo, Illinois--A base ball club has recently been organized at Cairo, Illinois....President, A. B. Safford. Vice President, Samuel Safford...The club numbers among its members some of the most substantial citizens of Cairo, and may be set down as a complete success." New York Clipper, Sept. 3, 1864

Banker Alfred Boardman Safford (1822-77) was reputed to be the wealthiest person in town. The local library is named for him.
