Vice President, Samuel Safford...The club numbers among its members some of the most substantial citizens of Cairo, and may be set down as a complete success." New York Clipper, Sept. 3, 1864

Banker Alfred Boardman Safford (1822-77) was reputed to be the wealthiest person in town. The local library is named for him.
