Description

The Empire Base Ball Club of Sedalia went to Jefferson City on Monday last for the purpose of matching the Capital Club of that place in a game of base ball. The delegation numbered over forty persons, including several ladies. They arrived at the depot in Jefferson City about one o'clock, P.M., and through some misunderstanding between somebody, the reception was not as cordial as it should have been. No conveyances were at the depot to carry the excursionists to the hotels and they were compelled to stand in the burning sun for sometime before the wagons were obtained, when they wee conveyed to the Tennessee and Virginia hotels, expecting, at the former house, that arrangements had been made to feed them. As we understand it, the Jefferson City folks are not to blame for this as some one of the Sedalia Club had written that they would not take dinner and hence the cause. Wagons and carriages were soon in readiness, and, headed by the brass band of that city, the two clubs and several hundred citizens, repaired to the grounds, about a mile from town, where excellent refreshments were furnished by the Capital Club. The grounds were well arranged and supplied with shade for the spectators, and refreshment saloons. A little after 2 o'clock the game commenced and was kept up, notwithstanding the oppressive heat, with animated spirit until twilight, when the game closed with Capital 74, Empire 59. The game was exciting and the playing would have done credit to more experienced clubs. Both parties were loudly applauded, and the Empire kept in the lead until about the sixth inning when the Capital commenced to count up on them and kept ahead until the close of the game. But little betting was done on either side. Two of the Sedalia Club met with accidents late in the afternoon, and withdrew from the field; save this nothing transpired to mar the pleasure of the game... After the game closed the excursionists and citizens repaired to the Tennessee House where an excellent repast awaited them. After supper the hall was cleared and the admirers ... commenced to trip the light fantastic. The dance had only commenced when the express train was announced and we, in company with a number of the Sedalia folks, started for home...The Capital Club did all in their power to make the party pleasant... -The Loyal Missourian (California, Mo.), July 4, 1867

Comment

It appears that this club was in existence by April of 1867. See the Jefferson City Tribune, May 8, July 7, 1867, which reports that several BBCs have been formed in the city.

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
