Description | The NY Mercury July 15, 1860 reports that the Benicia of South Danvers, MA, played the Franklin of Salem, MA on the 7th inst., with Benicia winning 43-40. The "Benicia" name was probably inspired by a noted boxer known as the "Benicia Boy." The South Danvers Wizard, Sept. 12, 1860 reports that the Benicias defeated the Lynn Outalanchets 76-11. Under the MA Rules. Per the South Danvers Observer, vol. 2, no. 4, which gives a brief history of early baseball in South Danvers. Says 8 of the 12 players left in 1861 to serve in the Union army. Same source mentions a Rockville Club of South Peabody. |
