| Description | The Davenport Daily Gazette, Oct. 22, 1866, reports that the Wapello Base Ball Club of Rock Island just returned from a baseball tournament in Peoria, beating the Enterprise of Peoria. Gives a box score. Same Sept. 5, 1867 has the Wapello and Lively Turtle as two of the teams playing in the Rock Island County Fair. The Chicago Tribune, July 27, 1867, has an extensive article on the State base ball convention. Among the clubs sending delegates were the Lively Turtle and Wapello of Rock Island. The Rock Island Argus, May 29, 1866 reports that "several young gentlemen" of the town have just organized a base ball club. Presumably, this is the Wapello. Same July 11, 1866 notes the formation of the Wapello BBC, and gives a roster. Same Aug. 1, 1866 and Aug. 27, 1866 notes games of the Wapello against the Pioneer of Geneseo and the Hawkeye of Davenport, the latter being defeated 118-7! |
