Description Writing of the Ohio youth of a Civil War general in about 1840, Whitelaw Reid (1868)[211] reported that “Touch-the-Base” was the favorite game, and of all who engaged in the romp, none were more eager or happy than ‘Jimmy” [the late Major-General James McPherson]. We cannot be sure that this was a ball game.
