Description

Cesar Gonzalez Gomez, "March, Conquest, and Play Ball: The Game in the Mexican-American War, 1846-1848," Base Ball, Fall 2011, pp. 13-22, cites the diary of Tennessean George Furber as saying his unit played a bat-ball game in Matamoros in Nov. 1846. The article speculates that this was a predecessor "town ball" type game, rather than the NY game.
