Description

Bloomington Pantagraph May 22, 1865: "our young men have concluded to form a Base Ball Club..." Same, June 5, 1865: H. A. Ewing, president, announces:  "The Bloomington Base Ball Club will meet for practice at their grounds near the 5th Ward School House..."

On August 7th this club defeated the Railroad Club 41-18. Same Aug. 9, 1865 gives the box score.

Same Sept. 18, 1865 reports the Bloomington played the Railroad for "the championship of McLean County," with the Bloomington winning 45-12.

Same Sept. 8, 1865 gives the box score, with players' names, of a game between the Bloomington club and the Excelsior of Chicago.

The Rockford Weekly Register-Gazette, June 30, 1866, reports on the Rockford Baseball Tournament. The Bloomington Base Ball Club of Bloomington finished 2nd in the tournament, beating (among others) the Cream City club of Milwaukee 23 to 20.

The same club lost to a Chicago team at the September 1866 baseball tournament in Bloomington. See the Springfield Illinois State Register, Sept. 10, Sept. 13, 1866. The "Star" club of Bloomington also played in this tournament.

The same club attended the Northwest Base Ball Convention in Chicago that December. See the Cleveland Leader, Dec. 22, 1866, picking up a Chicago Tribune article. According to the New York Clipper article on this convention, Jan. 5, 1867, the club was organized May 28, 1865, and had 90 members. G. W. Lackey and C. J. Roe were its delegates to this convention.

Robert D. Sampson, "Fields of Battle: The Problem of Base Ball Playing Space in Post Civil War Illinois," Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, vol. 110 Nos 3/4 (2017), 283-304, has much on this club and its early history.
