Description | The Wilmington Journal, Nov. 29, 1866, reports that the University Club of Chapel Hill is to play the Pioneer Club of Raleigh. Raleigh Tri Weekly Standard, Dec. 1, 1866, under the heading "Base Ball"--reports that these two teams played, and the University won. Gives the names of the players on both teams. The Raleigh Tri Weekly Standard, March 19, 1867, has the University Club refusing to challenge the National Base Ball Club of Raleigh, which had recently claimed the state championship. The university fielded its first varsity team in 1867.
