Description

The Hempstead Texas Countryman, Feb. 19, 1868, reports there is a ladies base ball club in Coldwater, Michigan. The club is unnamed.

The Detroit Advertiser and Tribune, Nov. 23, 1867 printed the original story (which was picked up in Hempstead) citing the Coldwater Sentinel as saying there was a ladies club in nearby Allen's Prairie and that one of the club members, a Miss Howard, died of over-exertion following a baseball game. However, a week late (Nov. 29th) the Detroit Advertiser retracted the story, saying Miss Howard died of typhoid fever, and not mentioning baseball. The proof that this club even existed is thus shaky.
