Description

Don Korte's "Galena's Baseball Legacy" (citing old newspapers) says that in July of 1866 the youthful Hellman brothers put an ad in the paper looking for volunteers who were interested in playing baseball. Those interested were "to leave their names at the Hellman store at 130 Main Street. Later, during August, the self proclaimed but unofficial Galena Base Ball Club requested the full attendance of all members at the DeSoto House." There's no evidence this team played a game in 1866.

The 1867 Jo Daviess team (which see) soon changed its name to the Galena. Korte's book gives brief bios of the players on this 1867 (and after) team.

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
