Description | The Cincinnati Daily Gazette, Aug. 13, 1867 mentions the Dexter Club "(colored)" of Springfield. Ditto the Rockford Weekly Register Gazette, Aug. 17, 1867 which quotes the Springfield Register as saying the Dexter wish to play for the state championship. The Springfield Daily Illinois State Journal, June 15, 1870 reports that the Dexter BBC (colored) reorganized last night as the Dexter Star BBC, with Charles Parker, president, Moses McCloud, VP and Albert Dyer, Captain. Same June 18, 1870 says this Dexter Club will play the Independent of Bloomington for the "colored championship of the state." Charles Parker and Moses McCloud were "colored" leaders of the Republican Party in Springfield. Parker was appointed secretary to the US Consul in Liberia in 1871. He's probably the Charles Parker, age 42, a barber in 1880 Springfield and a "laborer" in 1870. McCloud was president of the Lone Star BBC (presumably "colored") in 1877 (see Daily Illinois State Journal, April 26, 1877). Brunson, "Black Baseball, 1858-1900" names this the Dexter Star Club. |
