The captains of the two nines were two youthful native sons and cotton brokers, Joshua J. Doughty and James J. Russell. Doughty (1841-1914) went on to serve as a lieutenant in the Confederate artillery, then onto a long career as one of Augusta’s leading citizens, while Russell (1843-1924), the son of a wealthy merchant, served as private in the 7th Georgia Cavalry and owned a cotton-buying business postwar. Other players included banker Adrien C. Ives (1829-71), and accountant William C. Barber (1839-1912), the team secretary.</p> | |||
