Description | A letter datelined Havana, Ill., published in the New York Spirit of the Times: "I found the young people had formed a base ball club, and enjoyed themselves three times a week a the sport. There were some good, and even expert players, and two or three who would rank with the best at the North." Davenport Daily Gazette, April 10, 1861. The St. Louis Globe Democrat, Aug. 6, 1875: "Suburban. Jacksonville... The Alerts, of this city, defeated the Havana club in a game of base ball, played at Havana on Wednesday."
