Description

The Chicago Tribune June 22, 1869 reports on a game played in Wheaton "Saturday last" between the Eagle BBC of Batavia, and the School Boys of Wheaton, won by Wheaton 34-30. Query--were the "School Boys" a Wheaton College team?

This club might have existed in 1867. See the St. Charles, IL entry, for 1867 which talks of Batavia's "best pitcher" "Tom Meredith, later county clerk." Thomas Meredith, a hardware merchant, was born in 1835, died in 1888. See also The St. Charles Valley Chronicle, July 5, 1889, which says that a Capt. Offensend (prob. Olvin Offensend, 1832-1903) was the manager of this team.

Batavia was first settled in 1833, incorporated in 1872, and had 1621 residents in 1860.
