The Wheeling Register, June 22, 1890 reports that in 1865 a base ball club called the Belmonts was formed in Bellaire, Belmont County, Ohio (near Wheeling WV) by Dewitt Danford. They soon beat the Wheeling Stars. Among the players mentioned were Union army veterans Danford, Dr. Charles Adams, Robert H. Cochran, and Will Alexander.
