Description

H. J Philpott writes of sockball as played in the St. Louis area before 1890.  The rules he describes seem indistinguishable from those of dodgeball.  Thus, we might ask whether "sockey" -- also known in the midwest at this time --  might also be a form of dodgeball, and not a safe-haven game.
