Description

The Chicago Tribune, July 27, 1867, has an extensive article on the State base ball convention. Among the clubs sending delegates were the Empire of Champaign. The Springfield Daily Illinois State Journal May 14, 1868 reports on a state baseball convention which included delegates of clubs from Bloomington (Empire, Bloomington), Waukegan (Acme, Lake Shore); Champaign (Empire); and Geneseo (Pioneer).

"The beginnings: Champaign in the 1850s and 1860s" (1960) p. 35 explains further: "The Prairie Club of Champaign was organized in April 1867, with P. Van Horn, president; H. G. Gary, vice-president; George S. Scroggs, secretary; and W. S. Maxwell, treasurer." The Empire Club was also formed in 1867.

The Champaign County Gazette, Aug. 10, 1870 reports that the Empire of Champaign are to play the Muffers on Onarga, at the Empire Grounds, "just north of the I.B. and W. Ry. Depot." This would place the grounds just north of the Indianapolis, Bloomington and Western Ry. Depot, the depot being at Chesnut and Main Streets.

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
