Description

The first newspaper mention of organized baseball in New Orleans is of a game played July 29, 1859, between two nines (teams) of the Louisiana Base Ball Club. The sides started at 4 o’clock, and the nines could only complete four innings before darkness postponed the play, which was completed a few days later. See the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Aug. 3, 1859. See also the New York Clipper, Aug. 20, 1859. Both give a box score.

For more see Bruce Allardice, "The Inauguration of this Noble and Manly Game Among us. The Spread of Baseball in the South Prior to 1870," Base Ball, Fall 2012.
