Description At Sturge Park, Caribbean waves lapped almost across the boundary and on to the field. It was there, in 1990, that some superstitious cricket fanatics tried to get in touch with their African ancestors in the hope of ending the Montserrat team’s losing streak. On the eve of a big match they held a ‘jumbie dance’, appealing to their ‘jumbies’, walking dead men akin to the zombies of African voodoo. To the pounding of African bongo drums, they asked the jumbies to smile on their team and bring them victory. The jumbies responded with a half-smile: the Montserrat team scraped a draw.

Comment Montserrat is a self-governing British Overseas Territory. It is likely cricket was played here long before 1990. Edit with form to add a comment
