Description

The first recorded organized game in Austin was played June 29, 1869, with a team from the 15th U.S. Infantry defeating the Unknown of Austin 31-28.[“A Short History of Professional Baseball in Austin,” Austin Chronicle, July 4, 2003.]

The Unknowns played the Independents on Dc. 11, 1869. See the National Chronicle Jan. 8, 1870

The Austin Weekly Democratic Statesman, Dec. 14, 1871, reports: "The Boys in Blue, have organized a base ball club..." This may be the Sellers team, below.

By 1873, at least 5 baseball clubs graced Austin and played each other: the Sellers (of the 10th US Infantry); Capitols (formed Aug. 22, 1873); Colorados (formed Dec. 2, 1873) Olympics (of Sneed's school); and Cadets of Texas Military Institute (the two latter played in 1871).  The Hopeful club was formed in 1874. See the Austin Weekly Democratic Statesman, Nov. 27, 1873; Sept. 11, 1873; Aug. 28, 1873; and Nov. 20, 1873.
