The Cincinnati Commercial Tribune, Nov. 29, 1869: "Base Ball Matters [from the New York Clipper of November 27]. Review of the Season of 1869..."
"At Dresden, Saxony, on the same day [July 14], the American and Union clubs (both composed of Americans) had a game in which the Unionists proved victorious, with the score of 28 to 16."
 
The New York Clipper, Aug. 14, 1869 has an extensive report and box score of this game. Says the winners are to play the Freiburg club soon.
 
New York Herald, May 4, 1869: "The National Game.....
 A base ball club has been organized in Dresden, Saxony, by a number of young Americans, and the Saxons seem to take to the sport with a gusto.
 
Dresden is in Saxony--in 1869, a separate kingdom, today, a state in Germany.

Comment

The Bath (UK) Chronicle, April 15, July 22, 1869 reports there are 60 American students at the U. of Berlin, mostly from southern states, and 550 Americans in all at the various German universities. Another 1,000 Americans are in German boarding schools.
