Description | The Union Vedette (a newspaper of the Union army soldiers stationed in Salt Lake City), April 23, 1864, announces: "Base Ball--A club has been organized in the city under the name of the Union Base Ball Club." The article further notes it is composed of "gentlemen". Same, April 30, 1864, carries an ad for the meeting of the club. Same, May 3, 1864, says that at this meeting J. W. Elsworth [a local hotel proprietor] was elected president, and Wm. Spinner [of the city telegraph office] elected Secretary/Treasurer. It appears the two officers of the club, at least, were Gentile (non-Mormon) civilians resident in the city. |
