Description | The Le Franc-Parleur [Montreal] newspaper, May 9, 1872: "Le premier neuf du Club "Ste. Marie" a recu un defi publi par le voie du "Star" "de la part du club" "St. Laurent" pour joue une partie le 25 mai." From my limited French, the article goes on to say that the Ste. Marie club is made up of students attending the College Ste. Marie of Montreal, and the St. Laurent club is composed of employees of that company. Evidently Ste. Marie has claimed the local championship since 1870. http://archivesdemontreal.com/2015/04/02/a-brief-history-of-baseball-in-montreal-from-1860-to-1960/ shows an image of this club playing ball on Saint-Helene's island, southeast of the then-city, in 1874, from the Canadian Illustrated News. See also Humber, "Diamonds of the North," p. 110-111. Included because this is the earliest mention I've found of a French-Canadian club. |
