Description | The Saline County Journal, Thursday, July 23, 1874, announces that the Smoky Valley Base Ball Club was formed Thursday evening (unclear if this is 7-23 or 7-16) and gives the names of the players. Same Sept. 24, 1874 reports on a game between the two nines of this team. Same Oct. 22, 1874 mentions that the team's captain, Fitzhugh Selby, has resigned. The Saline County Journal, Oct. 8, 1874: "Minneapolis--The Fair--The Base Ball Game. The match game of base ball between the Salina and Minneapolis clubs, which took place at the latter place last Thursday..." was won by Salina's "Smokey Valley" 62-27 over the hometown "Dreadnaughts." Harold Evans, "Baseball in Kansas, 1867-1940," Kansas Historical Quarterly v. 9, issue 2 (1940) says that Abilene and Salina has baseball clubs in the early 1870s. From the context, it appears that Evans' source was newspaper accounts from 1876 and before. |
