Description | "Base Ball. – The match of game between the first nines of the Pulaski and Guidon ball clubs, which came off at the Arsenal grounds on Saturday last, attracted quite a large crowd of spectators. The latter named club is composed of soldiers of battery of battery "G," 5th artillery –- stout fellows and fine players, and their defeat was not anticipated by outsiders. The game was a very interesting one, being very closely contested, as well be seen from the following score: Total, 41 (Pulaski) . . . 30 (Guidon) Umpire–E.P. Bishop Scorers–Guidon, J. P. Aikon; Pulaski, W. A. Patterson. The utmost good feeling prevailed during the match. On the announcement of the result, the Guidon gave three cheers for the successful competitors, which was returned, and both gave hearty cheers for the umpire." NOTE: Bruce Allardice [email of 9/9/10] observes that the Guidon Club must have been constituted from the occupying US Army, as the Confederate army had had no "5th Artillery." He surmises that the Pulaski club's victory may have surprised the reporter because it included government workers and ex-soldiers, who were less fit than active soldiers. |
