Description | The (Virginia City) Montana Post, July 24, 1868 reports last Friday, July 17, the Occidental BBC was formed at Justice A. J. Edwards' office. Henry Burdick, Esq. was chosen president. The new club practiced "on the grounds situated opposite Taylor and Thompson's claim, on the right hand side of the gulch, this afternoon." The "gulch" appears to be Alder's Gulch, which runs southeast to northwest through the town, which was the center of a huge gold strike 1864-69. Browning, "Montana Baseball History" p. 22 says the Occidental Base Ball Club of this town was formed in 1868, with Henry Burdick (later the state's attorney general) as president. |
